The fadM gene in Escherichia coli encodes a thioesterase, which is a key protein in the fatty acid metabolic process. The enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of thioester bonds, which are present in many activated fatty acid cofactor A (acyl-CoA) substrates, acyl-carrier proteins (ACPs), glutathione, and other cellular molecules.
